Does "Update Date" still matter if the content hasn't changed significantly?

Hi everyone,

I have a few evergreen articles that have been ranking in the top 3 for over a year. I’ve noticed some competitors are constantly changing the "Last Updated" date on their posts every week, even though the actual content remains 95% the same.

In your experience lately, does Google still reward this "fake freshness," or is the algorithm smart enough to detect that no substantial value was added? I’m hesitant to update my dates without making real changes because I don't want to risk losing my current rankings.

Do you recommend a "deep refresh" (adding new data/images) or is it safer to just leave a well-performing post alone?

Thanks for any white-hat insights!
