Does Transferring a Domain also Re-Register It?

I have a domain at Network Solutions that will expire in 7 days. I hate Network Solutions.

I want to re-register the domain, but I don't want to give Network Solutions the money. If I transfer the domain to (for example) register.com, will it also be re-registered?

Check with the registrars, but when i transfer and I have to pay a fee from namecheap or network solutions I get a year.

Granted I haven't transferred domains like this between myself and my hosting packages in years, so things might have changed

Yea, you have to pay for min a year when you transfer.
