Okay, I have heard yes and no and would like to get others opinions.

If I start driving traffic to a site that is #5, would it help me get to #1 or would it have no effect at all? Lets say I purchased a few packages of 10,000 for $7 from the post in BHW and sent 1,000 visitors per day. Would this help and if so, how long do you think it would take to start moving up?

    Thanks for your input

Yes it would help you increase your ranking, but don't think 10,000 will be the only thing that you need.

You might have to do 10,000+ per day for an entire month to move up in position.

If you want to move up in positions, since you are in first page, I recommend linking from ehow.com articlebase.com youtube.com ezinearticles.com suite101.com blogspot.com

    That should do the trick.

    Yes traffic helps serps.

You will need a TON of traffic though to get from 5 to 1 as others have said multiple thousands per day more than you get now for that factor alone to really mean anything.

I have started submitting articles to articlbase.com and trying to get them accepted in to ezinearticles.com but not having much luck. They seem to nitpick over everything. Also, working on some splogs at blogger.com. Never thought about ehow or suite101.

On a separate note, does anyone know what or if there is a penalty for tweaking/changing the title tags on a site after it has been indexed?

    Thanks for everyone's help

There can't be a penalty for doing that: it is called updating the site.

I understand it is called updating, but I have read (cant remember where) that certain changes will get you penalized by Google.

Keep in mind that it is not just about how much traffic you get but how long that traffic stays on your webpage. Google hates high bounce rates.

Well if you originally get your site ranked in a particular niche based on a set of keywords which your also using in your title, and then you change your title tags and other keywords, to something completely unrelated then it might have a negative result on your position. Not because your being penalized, so much as because you've added some confusion to data the algorithms are using to index your site.

If you make changes that are still in line with your keywords, then it will more likely have either a positive effect, or not really make any difference at all.

I can't really see how sending traffic directly to your site is going to help your ranking in google? If the traffic isn't going through the google search engine i.e. users aren't clicking on your link through google how will they even know about it? Google or any other search engine wont be involved. There will be no change to your click through rate or bounce rate and I can't see how it'll make a difference.

The other side is that if you can get these 1000's of users to stay on the site, create content from them in some way then you could potentially benefit from new unique content. Or perhaps divert them off your site to refferer spam.
