I just realized that all of my tier 2 backlinks aren't relevant to my money site (since my tier 1 is expired web 2.0s, pbns, blog comments, their tier 2s are whatever the previous owner made them). Is it worth it to spend time to manually make tier 2 backlinks to these with my anchor text? I see people saying for example that the point of a PBN is that you don't need to build links to it, but I also see some people saying that if you're not building links to your pbn you're missing out on link juice. But my question is unique because I'm wondering if the specific anchor text used can also help in tier 2 to boost the money site.

Well you don't want your tier1s penalized for overoptimization, so you need diverse anchors used. If Google sees your tier1s as good, powerful properties, they'll contribute to ranking your moneysite better. If G sees them as spammed/overoptimized - not so much.

It's a good question in some ways, but effective SEO even in terms of gaming google for the most traffic doesn't work with spammed anchor text anyway.
At the risk of repeating something I've posted several times.
Say your niche is "cell phone"

You are going to want

Naked anchors at about 40%
Generic anchors "click here" or "this" and loads of others - at about 40%
You are going to want your money anchor at about 3-4% max
then you are going to want the other 16-17% to be associated keywords - quite a few of them with none of them more than 2.5% of the anchors

Say

mobile
3g
Apple
IPhone
cell
4g
messenger
text message

etc

Ideally the content these links are in is also based on wide mix of these keywords with as much supporting content as the platform can take based on a wide mix of these contextual keywords. The main "money" keyword should be the most prominent of course, but not by much.

Do a campaign like this. Wait 4-6 weeks to see the results. Revisit as required.
Another benefit is, in a soft niche (so FFS don't REALLY do mobile phones) you will rank for many of these associated phrases as well bringing in a ton more traffic.
Safer AND better.

Scritty

Thanks for the detailed answer. So you would recommend building links to tier 1 manually with anchor text similar to the tier 1 and money site's? I understand what you said, but I'm wondering if in your opinion it's worth it to do so for tier 2 links such as expired web 2.0s with already existing backlinks.

be careful when you build with the same anchors for Tier 1 and 2, sometimes you end up outranking your own site with those web 2.0s, it did happen to me

That's a really good question. It could be possible to get tier 2 and tier 3 links with exact match as the keywords you would want to rank your money site on.

Actually, that doesn't sound bad. It' sworth testing in my opinion. Will implement in my next project and report back
