Comments sometime helps but only when you hit the right spot for example you are commenting on a blog topic "Best Food Recipies" and you are also having a similar blog so you can comment under it and ask them to look for your recipies too and if possible they can add your recipies in their blog post.
Profile Building works in Online Reputation Management, so you can say that these ways are not dead but their using behavior has now been changed completely.

Go for the guest post on sites which have a lot of traffic(atleast 5k organic visitors a day) , place a long tail keyword in the title of the guest post and in the content ofcourse, rank the guest post for that long tail keyword. This way you get the traffic to the guest post and it will give massive link juice to your main site at the same time.

Yes, but not only this will create magic. Try to add contextual backlinks too for good output.
