yes, CTR and UX such as SERP bounce rate & user average time could play a major role,
naturally, this is more important when you reach page 1 as you'll get users & enough data to make an influence from its spots,
in fact, some people use it as an advantage and manipulate the click to reach the top spots instead, which can be kinda profitable in some niches,
but just like any other factor, it could be dominated by links

If you're doing better than the first two with your CTR and time spent, you could possibly over take them. But you should know a lot is taken into consideration by Google before ranking sites. If I were you, I won't rest nor wait for CTR to help improve my position.
Look at what the top guys are doing better, try implement those and see what works.

Thanks for your answer. It always got into my head that somehow CTR play a role when you are on first page but some people always said that it's not.
The person ranking above me has no links , no nothing. Same thing for me, basically we are ranking with a parasite.

It's easy to think of counterexamples.
Think iphone. You'll never outrank apple even if the whole world just clicked on your link IMO
CTR might be a signal but it's one of many stronger ones

I see that it also comes to authority but from my end , the people ranking in the serp have no links , neither do i. That's why it came to my mind to try Ctr as I don't want to mess it up by sending backlinks.

Well thats an interesting case. Shouldn't be too hard to reverse engineer what they're doing and doing it better.

personal experience: i have found that good CTR gets you to the first page, but you need many other positive attributes to get to that first position.

They also track the back button. Good CTR with lots of people hitting the back button is a bad signal.

i think this needs a clarification: back button and going back to google search result is a bad signal. back button within the site itself is not applicable here. let me know if you agree with this. thanks

4. User Experience
5. Page Depth
6. Conversion
You need to optimise each of the factors to get to the top position.
Note: you don't need to hyper optimise everything all the time, but just take a competitive advantage against your competition.
This sums up all for ranking on the top, once you are on Page 1.

Right! I meant hitting the SERP back. They track this signal using pings.
