I see this come up in my link checking software as a backlink.
https://www.reference.com/web?q=keyword+search
Does this count as a link and pass authority?

I am tending to believe no just like those google referred backlinks people were doing last year.

What do you think?

It may have impacts on MOZ metrics but not passing link juice and authority I suppose.

imo, depends if this is a permanent (good) or temporary link (useless).
permanent would mean you always appear in such search query, which is probably not the case.
so yeah as was said, this may just have a tiny link juice in it.
