Does the subject / text a backlink comes from matter?

I know that the actual, anchor text the link comes from matters... but my question is this....

If I write an article about "Cars" but link out to "Yoga" on a relevant keyword to Yoga like (Yoga Positions)... does it matter?

First, why would you link that way? Unless you are linking from a PBN using the link injection technique, I'd advise you to avoid linking like that. To answer your question, it's wrong and inadvisable.
 
For my PBN I'm rebuilding domains as they once were so they look more authentic. If I was just to plop a random article that was niche relevant in it would look out of place.

Its best to link from relevant sites but if your niches are closely related, you may be fine. Cars and yoga may both come under sports which may be cool.

That was just an example... lets just assume they are completely unrelated.

I know a lot of people upload their own content for PBN's but I think a sort of new strategy is to rebuild the websites as they use to be so they are harder to detect. I'm wondering how to link out and make it look relevant?

Cant have sidebar and footer links on every site... some of them have to be "Article Style" correct? Should I just plop a Niche Relevant Article on the homepage of the website and move on?
 
You've already been given three no's. And that is indeed the right answer. It goes against the niche, and will result in problems.

So you're suggesting delete the content and put up Niche Relevant content?
 
Ever heard of niche relevant backlinks? Because this wouldn't be one of them. This is what you'd call a totally out of context, confused backlink with no real purpose at all.

Most people seem to think Niche relevancy isnt a big deal.
 
Y'know when someone gets a haircut and then asks you if you like it? They don't wanna know the real answer, they just want to feel validated. This thread is an example of that.
 
Yes, it matters. Contextual links in relevant articles are better however link is link and you still get the juice even anchors wouldn't be matching to your target keywords.

Not at all, I understand how you get that vibe though.

I've been told that the niche relevancy of the domain doesnt matter, and I've also been told it matters.

I've also seen PBN's that are built with articles about multiple subjects, all different in nature.

So yes, I'm confused. If PBN's are built like that wouldnt it be fine to use a websites old content (from archive.org) and add a niche relevant article and link out to your money site?
 
The relevancy matters, but I think saying an out of place link serves no purpose at all is a stretch. The problem in my eyes is that if you've got this one post that sticks out like a sore thumb, and that happens to be the post with a link to your site...well you can see how that'd get suspicious pretty quick. PBNs with articles about multiple subjects don't carry niche value, but aren't inherently suspicious because they're already covering a variety of topics, so there's nothing out of the ordinary if they start covering something new. But if a site about cars suddenly added a post on dollhouses...there's no way to explain that, y'know?
 
The domain/website might not matter, but the contextual content around it does. So if your PBN is about yoga but your money site is about cars, an example post you could make is how to transport your yoga mat in a car. Obviously this isn't the best example but should give you a better understanding .
 
Great answers guys, that's the descriptive type of stuff I'm looking for!

So it's still the best bet to add all your own content in a wordpress style blog it seems.
