Does the Image File Name Matter in SEO?

Like most of the seo expert already mentioned its importance. I also think it is a good practice to keep it close to keywords or alt keywords.

And this is not stuffing as well. Its a part of image SEO as well. But that doesn't mean you put all the related words in the file. Just keep it simple.

Also to add - depends on the type of image. If you're doing store images with locations for GBP/Store Pages - looking at the metadata (embedded data on images, not meta titles/descriptions) and ensuring that the location metadata is accurate to the location can be beneficial.

Also - crawlers etc. can't understand images. So the question to ask yourself is "How can a crawler/search engine/LLM understand what this image is about?" - You have image name, you have alt text, you have image metadata, you have link context if it's an anchor, that's about it.
 
It used to matter long ago, but nowadays AI knows exactly what the image contains, so the filename hint isn't as strong a signal as it was back in the day
 
File names help a little bit, but alt tags matter more for SEO. If you're short on time, focus on alt tags they carry more weight. Renaming files is nice, that help a little, but not worth the big effort unless you're already doing a full cleanup. Focus on alt tags.

Not major.imoact but still should be on keyword name.
 
Alt tags have more direct SEO impact, especially for accessibility and image search. File names help too, but if workload is high, prioritize descriptive alt text for now.

In the past, several years ago I had edited a large number of image file names and then did re-direct to the old names as the URL of the image changes and also added ALT names and on the whole I did saw some traffic coming from Google image search.

The effort is too much, the result isn't huge but there will be some traffic increase. If you have time then I would suggest you to do it.
 
I’ve audited a couple of big ecom sites before honestly, renaming thousands of product images rarely moved the needle. Alt tags and surrounding text are way more influential for ranking. If you have the budget or automation to rename them nicely, great, but don’t sweat it if time is limited. Alt text + file compression + proper sitemap does 90% of the job.
 
Even if it is not heavily optimized, I always ensure the file name makes sense to me or the audience.
 
There are basics like do not give a random name to image. The name should be related what the image is all about.
 
I believe image name has minimum impact on your rankings but it's a good practice to give your files good names. It's just common sense and make your life easier.
 
Technically, image alt tags are still the most important factor for google to understand the content of an image and help with SEO. Image file names can help if they contain relevant keywords, but the impact is not as great as alt

In SEO factor image name is called alt text. Alt text is very important in SEO.

Yes, image file names affect SEO slightly, but alt tags are more important.
Focus on updating alt tags first for better results.
Rename file names only if you’re updating key products or uploading new ones.
 
It matters a lot, in my experience, I had experience when my article was not ranked by article url but through Imge url, and it appeard on top of the search when people were searching with that specific keyword and clicked on images
