Does the amount of content on Web 2.0s matter?

Hi guys quick question. I've been writing articles for directories/web 2.0s and I've been aiming for 400-500 words, but does the length really matter? Would it hurt anything to take it down to 300 words for web 2.0s? I've heard you're supposed to keep it over 400 words but I'm not sure why. Thanks.
 
There's no thumb of rule for this. If you are creating these links in bulk, then I'd suggest you change the word count every time you post. FOr eg, make one that's 300 words, another one with 500 word article, in some other, add an image, in yet another, embed a video. This will look much natural to search engines.
 
You may have 300-word articles to be submitted for web 2.0 and I agree that you can embed videos and post also images.
