At the start of my blogs i didn't really care about social media, but after checking my competition I decide to give it a try by using this plugin "Easy Social Share Buttons for WordPress", this plugin has daily stats on how many people click on share, etc, after a period of time I see some increase on google visitors and social visitors coming to my network. I'm not 100% sure if the google search increase was from this change but for now, I keep it.
 
Social networking won't directly affect your ranks because it isn't a ranking factor.

It will defentely affect, atracting people to your site, is going to generate an indirect traffic is usufefull so people can discover your site and now days people consume a lot of social media but is optional and still you can rank good.
 
Yes Its create your website brand like after following on social media people will search your website name in google and google prefer websites those searches by their name
