Hi Black Hatters,


I needed your suggestions. I heard from someone that if you buy a VPS instead of a shared host.. You get extra points for the SEO of the blog.. Is it true? He told me that the speed of the VPS helps in the SEO.

Please advise.

Since loading speed is a ranking factor, yes, servers do have an impact on SEO. Another problem with shared hosts is that you might get into a "bad neighborhood" (eg. spammy sites with bad links are hosted on the same IP) which can also hurt your rankings.

I've never used VPS for hosting, so I don't know wether there is a benefit. I don't think it's better than a fast server though.

Only two things matter in this regard. A) For local SEO it's nice to have the host close to the location. B) Like the person above stated load times matter for ranking factors. In this sense a VPS would perform better. A CDN can be nice too.

a shared ssd hosting is a good way to start, and if want more you can ask for a dedicated ip

A solid shared host can be much better than your own VPS.

This post just sums it up.
 
On a VPS only your sites are on that IP address, meaning you don't need to worry about other "bad" sites giving that IP address a bad reputation. This also comes into play if you're doing E-blasts - I know that wasn't the question, but reputation counts in a lot of different areas.

In terms of speed, a crap VPS is still going to be just as bad as a crap shared hosting account, so load time, which whether or not it counts as a ranking signal, will count with your visitors.

I have a great shared host which is I use for a blog - it's pretty quick, and I also have a mediocre VPS which I use for adult hosting. I preferred the shared host as pages load a lot quicker which means I should have less of a bounce rate, which will ultimately affect my rating in the SERPs as Google will penalise you if someone clicks your link and then closes the page and clicks another link in too short a time period i.e they didn't find what they wanted, or they gave up waiting.
 
If you are in the business world you would be better off choosing a VPS according to the needs of your web site.

Have you been using hosting, while the site is in trouble when in the open, for example 5 days, surely rank your website will go down
 
I dont think this,SEO can be good also if you going with shared host only you have to do the seo with all good way with high quality.
 
You are good to go with shared hosting and ask for unique IP. You really dont need VPS. Are you doing viral traffic and handle hundreds thousands visitors at same time? If yes then go for vps / dedicated server.

On the contrary: it can help your SEO when you are booked with a solid host that has a high trust factor.
 
Im using hostnine reseller account.. what would you guys recommend? should I start using VPS now?

Matt Cutts is just talking random stuff. I can get as much SEO info from the random drunk guy at the bar. That is all he's done all these years and people actually sit there and take notes of what he's saying....

Definitely, server plays an important role in SEO. If your website is targeted to users from certain country, it is better to locate the website on a good hosting site in that country or, at least, close by. Or If the website is targeted to users around the world, then server location is not very important. Use CDN service so that the website loads quickly anywhere in the world. This will improve user experience and SEO.
 
Also keep an eye on your server up-time, there are free services as well that check your website every 5 or 10 minutes and will instantly let you know when your website server is down and for how long.
 
Not server really, but IP is important. Make sure your IP is as clean as possible. These days you can get VPS from Digital Ocean for $5/mo - its comparable to web hosting companies. Then add to it proper CDN and your site will be flying no matter where visitor comes from.
