Its simple, along with backlinks, domain authority is important. Age of your website is important.

Its an Algorithm, so "Pure luck" is out of question.

But luck matters, in stuff like "Getting the Right Kind of links, At the Right Time"
 
The first rule about SEO is not to talk about SEO. We're just a bunch of guys sitting around, speaking of algo's we obviously doesn't know and pushing our luck a little more than rest of the folks out there ;)

It's OK, OP is just mad because he is one of the unluckier ones in life. Five years ago he set out to rank for "Pakistani chat rooms". Five years later he still hasn't managed to find a wife off of the number 1 ranked "Pakistani chat room".

I think you're right.
i heard that for certain searches (especially chat room searches) google just gets all the relevant results, then displays them in completely random order!
