It might help with faster indexation and social proof but won't improve your backlink profile if thats what your'e asking.

I hadn't heard much about them having any effect on SEO before. But I've noticed, that a lot of companies are using reddit's links. That's why, maybe they use them in this way, as Ibraisthegod said.
but everyone can make a reddit account and link to his website, so how does google is able to distinguish a valid backlink?

Tried it, ran a test... no improvement in terms of rankings.

Its good for referral traffic. But in terms of SEO? I don't think it would do much.

The referral traffic could actually help as a ranking factor 
Maybe not so much with links in comments as there would not be enough clicks, but creating link posts and then boosting these to the top has worked well in some cases for me.
A post that led to over 7,000 clicks to my page resulted in it ranking #3 for my target keyword within 16 hours. These rankings did only stay for a week, but I believe this has more to do with the fact it was a parasite with 0 optimisation over anything else.
I ran several experiments with Reddit in this past year, I had a parasite case study planned to post here but haven't had the time. Might need to warm up my fingers

In this case the page I was trying to rank was a parasite, I wasn't expecting much in the long run.

I've gotten a backlink from reddit before.
Was a new article I posted in the cryptocurrency subreddit. It got over 2,000 up votes and over 300 comments. The backlink was do-follow, however it only lasted roughly 2 months and this was 2 years ago. So unsure how it works today

Many people (quite strangely) are not aware that by default, links on Reddit have a no-follow attribute, which makes them of little to no value in the eyes of Google.
BUT ... Many people (quite strangely) are not aware that for Reddit posts that get enough upvotes, the links get converted to do-follow links, which is a valuable backlink for SEO purposes.
