I recently started amping up a client's posts with maybe 100 or so fake likes through a provider I got on this forum.

What has resulted is our engagement dropping at least 40% subsequently.

Does this happen often? Is there a magic number that you can boost a post before Instagram starts knocking you down?

Depends which like you purchase, if it's from smm panel so yes it will
If it's power likes from established accounts it can skyrocket your account.

I have used smm panels for a few clients, but whenever my clients post high quality/viral content it would go viral and hit the explore page...
So i'm not sure if ig has caught up with it yet.

I haven't noticed any "Shadow Banning" if that's what you're seeking an answer for...

I had the same issue with one of my accounts. The average number of Likes for this account was around 1000/post, totally organic and with no bought Likes.
I bought 300 likes for my last published post (from a SMM panel) and the final number of Likes reached 850!!! I believe buying likes, at least from SMM panels which sell fake likes generated from fake users, will lead to a drop in engagement.

Are you aware IG has taken an urging initiative to block such fake social signals? and as a part of it, numerous accounts were facing warnings before. Most probably, you used a shabby provider and not likely drip-fed.

So basically buying likes to competitors will drop their engagement. Obviously, it cannot be so easy to destroy a competitor...

I'm doing an experiment this morning. I'll report back.

Can already tell you: not on the long term. I tried it on a viral page and it wasn't affected at all
How is this possible? What about a smaller account (under 10K), do you think that would be more impactful?

i don't know but maybe they just check if it is random or not, tried to fuck up pages also by buying fake followers it didn't worked. Probably because their engagement was pretty high, so it didn't affected it

Never buy likes or followers you cannot make money like this, only you will lose because you will not have followers that will spend money on product that you are selling

Think about how would your picture do without those likes. Would people still be interested in your content??

If the answer is no, those likes will be just numbers and when you stop using them your engagement will drop.

If you bought cheap likes instead of quality likes yes, this will hurt your account.
