I got a client who I am helping to SEO his name. He has a well funded start up and when you search his name bad press shows up and he wants the two results that currently show to be pushed down. I am having luck ranking things on the first page but not getting those results pushed off the page. So does negative SEO work on gov and news pages where the main site has a high PR?

Your client should really get a new "SEO expert"...

If he has a well funded startup then you should easily get him a feature in Tech Crunch or venture Beat, right? Fill the top with editorial content that will rank.

Question : Why would you target gov and news pages with negative SEO?

Question 2: Are you confident enough to take them down?

Question 3: Why not improve his name by positive SEO? Are you not confident enough to do this?

The real question you are asking is "can you outrank .gov", and the answer is yes.

negative seo on .gov wont work, you can outrank them though, but in this case and many other combining good seo work with google's "right to forget" would probably do the trick

Apart from the fact that negative SEO is illegal in most countries, it's no long term solution to get those results out of sight, even if it would work in your case (it won't). The right approach would be to push this negative stuff to page 2 (or even 3) by replacing it with own properties/sites. Certainly not an easy task, something with a $XXXXX price tag and a pretty long timeframe with this kind of "competition". At least if you are doing it properly and don't want the ugly stuff to pop up again a few months later.

"Right to be forgotten" only works in the EU and if there is any public interest in the information, e.g. court proceedings, a (suspected) crime , bankruptcy or similar, Google won''t remove the result. Especially something on an official government site sounds a lot like public interest.

No they won't even bulge. They are authority sites by themselves the negative seo is onyl going to make them better.

Google wants fresh content so go make some new social pages and rank them and push the bad press down to other pages. Also tell your client any publicity is good publicity ;)

Your better off creating good content about your client and ranking that. Chances are the .gov and other sites that you want to push down are not tough competition.

Technically, it is possible, now giving the effort required you better invest them into your client's website, as you would outrank more websites than just dropping down one single website.

I would make at least 20 to 30 guest posts on very high DA sites or create parasites and fill the first two pages with them instead.

No, you will only make the negatives stronger. You need to perform reputation management, which is pushing good stuff up, or creating it and then pushing those up. No way you will neg SEO any authority site like that with links, you'll just make it stronger.
