does mail.com sound shady?

unfortunately, I cannot use any of the main email providers like hotmail or gmail. I don't want to use protonmail or tutanota mail because I think those sound shady. Like they scream "scammer" if someone told me his email was protonmail I would think "what the hell is wrong with this guy?"
Do you think mail.com is also shady?

Personally I don't find it scammy or shady. mail.com sounds like a standard email provider. But like @lucky.sparks said nothing beats using your domain name.

You could use a .com domain.

Mail.com its security is whack for starters and mail.com is ad-supported which you know they reads/scans your mail to tailor ads to you.
Not only that, by using their service you opt in to letting them collect and mine data from you to sell
Once again, delusional if you think tuta/proton is a scammer when you are considering mail.
Even gmail/ms would be a much better option at this point.

I think OP is worrying that he will look like a scammer if using those because of privacy they offers, not that he thinks proton is a bad email service.

I kinda agree with OP because always when I see proton mail, I instantly assume the person is trying to mask and hide identity.

mail.com sells data and not best security I use protonmail, but if you want it for your business why don’t you use your own domain?

a real paid proton user wouldn't use protonmail.com to begin with.
and second, someone who is worried about reputation would just use their own custom domain with any provider they want.

That's just total stereotype form people who really have no idea how the privacy works and dabbled here and there and kinda knows whats up but really don't.
A business user or an average consumer wouldn't even know what masking is, what email spoofing is, let alone protonmail or tutona.
And to them, anything that isn't hotmail gmail icloud outlook or the company brand is "sketchy" to them.

mail.com will sometimes close your account for no apparent reason. It's happened to me with several accounts I've had with them.
Also, if you plan to give it out to people in conversations, you often have to explain that it is mail.com and not Gmail.com which gets annoying and you're always thinking whether they might send mail to a gmail.com account and not your mail.com address lol

You could try inbox.lv i use them a lot.

While I understand what you are saying, I disagree with that stereotype thing. What about being aware of red flags that anonymous and privacy-based email providers give has something to do with stereotypes?

It's the same as when people want to receive payments in crypto only, does it mean they are scammers? Obviously not. But it should be taken into consideration that if something will go wrong, your ability to resolve the matter will be highly decreased.

We can compare two vendors,

first: uses protonmail, accepts only crypto payments
second: uses business domain name, accepts paypal or stripe

to whom of them you would be more open to giving money and paying for their services?

you basically agreed with what I said then continue to argue your point while contradicting your own statement.

If you use the same logic you/OP originally mentioned, people who are more privacy focused or aware are just labelled as scammers/sketchy then.
Namecheap also allows crypto fyi so they are now scammers/sketchy?

also, proton doesn't only accept crypto, it accepts PayPal/cc aswell.

This is why people shouldn't be trying to make a point on services they have do not know about in
Proton is NOT a service for anonymity or to hide your identity online.
It is a Privacy based service.
You don't like stereotyping but once again, you are sterotyping proton mail as a service to hide yourself behind which it is not.

Anonymity – Keeping your identity private, but not your actions. For example, using a pseudonym to post messages to a social media platform.
Privacy – Keeping some things to yourself, which can include your actions. For example, messaging friends privately so they know who sent the message, but only they can read it.

Protonmail has options or features to make you a bit more anonymous online, but it isn't focused on it such as the ability to sign up without having any data/email/phone linked back to you.
Allowing you to purchase plans via crypto so it cannot be traced back to you (once again, if you are using a public wallet that is publicly identified linked to you/doxxed, that's once again your own issue, not protons)
It has tor access and onion website if you rather use that than the normal www

With all due respect, why are you going so off-topic? The main idea was if you are using protonmail would that impact your business instead of using mail.com, from a buyer's perspective.

I don't care if you are privacy oriented, it's my money and my risk management procedures I would use to determine if I want to do business with you, and yes if you are using any of those - it would rise suspicion from me. And not because of your bad intentions, but because there are plenty of other people using those to run scams.

Protonmail is great. Hopefully over time we will get over this stigma and protonmail will become more mainstream

OP, what do marketers in your field use for their own emails? Might as well follow suit if they're having success with a certain provider (unless it's hotmail or gmail as you mention).
