Hi guys,

I've heard from some seo experts that linking to authority sites will help you in seo since "you act like an authority" by sharing high value resource to your visitors.

Is that true?

@ForeverNever

Thank you for your quick reply.

By the way, what do you mean by the message I entered is too short? increase the length of my message to at least 5 characters?

The thanks button is there for a reason.

And I just copied and pasted the error it gave me when I attempted to submit "Yes." as the reply. Don't worry about it.

Yes, it's good to link to authority sites. Don't overdo it, but a few good links is good. But don't expect a big ROI on that, it would be too easy.

But if you can get the authority sites to link to your site, that is much better, but more difficult to get.

@voxclan

Thanks. I did notice my top competitors do link to authority sites a few times on their sites. So I'm going to do the same.

Look at the age of the website you link to before considering linking to them. Although I would say it has some benefit in ranking atm, it isn't so significant to the point where it makes a noticeable change, however, that may of course change over time.

Yup, it helps a great deal in fact, and for new sites especially.

I have always linked my sites (even spammy ones) to authority sites (high PR).

An additional trick I used is to add the "nofollow" when linking to authority sites.

Can I just link to a relevant youtube.com page even if the youtube page itself has no single incoming backlink?

For example, my site is about gardening , can I link to a PR 0 Youtube gardening video page and still get benefit out of it?

Or shall I link to my competitor site , it's a HIGH PR authority site about gardening related stuffs, but why should I link to them? I want to outrank them.

Thanks

Make sure your authority sites aren't you competition for the keywords though. By linking to them, you are telling Google they are an authority and should be ranked higher than you. Doesn't mean you can't pass them while you're linking to them, but it makes it a lot harder.

Yes Linking to Authority Sites is good but Which are the best authority Sites.

I've created a backlink from Google to my niche site :).

Not sure how effective that link is. Looks like google still haven't found the link (it's not listed in Google Webmaster Tool). Despite having that link my niche site is still on serp #3
:(

I've also read that the effect of a high authority site is devided by the number of outgoing links from the authority site. So if google has 3000 outgoing links, then the effect of it's PR10 is PR10/3000. Which maybe can result in an effective pagerank of 4 maybe, not sure

Yes they can definitely help. I outranked my competition by linking to them.

@underDog - How do you link to a wikipedia article, can you give an example, I tried before but was not able to do that.

How does the "nofollow" help and how do you do it?

Definitely helps out.

Google looks for quality outbound links on your sites.
