Hey Buddy -

Ive been doing linkwheels before they were even called linkwheels (Michale Campbell actually coined the term "jiggling the web" - which was the original "linkwheel"), and I still use them. However - like the Google algorithm changes and evolves, your linkwheel methods need to evolve.

Lets take a shot at your questions:

1. Yes
2. When using a linkwheel it is always important to set up your "buffer sites." For example, I NEVER build a wheel around my money site - rather - I only build wheels around more authoritative web 2.0 sites that hold a link to my money site. (think Squidoo, Hubpages, Wetpaint...etc.) Using this strategy you will never be penalized by google. Side Note* - the term "sandboxed" actually refers to something different than a Google penalization. Look it up for the eact definition.
3. Yes Linkwheeling will affect your main, or "money" site. Provided you follow my instructions in answer 2, you will build the reputation of your "buffer" site. The link inside your buffer site to your main site will carry more weight and will affect your SERP positively.
4. You are comparing apples to oranges. Direct linking to your main site is great and is considered traditional SEO. Provided they are quality/relevant links they wil force your SERP higher in the rankings. And although proper linkwheeling will provide **************** links, the main purpose behind this strategy is to rank on PG1 by piggybacking upon the existing authority of many web 2.0 sites.
5. Again - proper use of yor buffer sites will prevent any negaive impact on your site.

1) Linkwheels still work. The discussion around them -- OK, the best of those discussions -- takes the concept of the linkwheel, explores the downsides, and tries to build more sophisticated and efficient forms.

2) and 5) Google people have repeatedly stated that Google does not penalize a site because of sites linking in, only those they link out to. The theory being that nobody can control who links to them and if penalties were made people would create all sorts of penalty links in the name of their competition.

3) Any links, including link wheels, can only help your site with the ratings. The questions may be what type of links and shapes are best suited for a given site.

4) The concept of the link wheel was that the formula Google uses let sites pass juice to each other. The specific wheel form let each site increase the rank of the next site in the wheel and thus increase the rank it passed to the money site. Theoretically, the link wheel should be better than the same number of isolated inbound links. Overall, the best suggestion involves mix of linked wheels, unclosed "wheels", and standing independent inbound links.

I have just built some Linkwheels for a german money site. You have to spam your "spokes" with much links, like BM, WC and other techniques. Find your way to make your wheels stay unique.
