Does link juice pass from domain to subdomain?

Hello Everyone!


I wanted to ask a really quick question. Say for instance I had an expired domain with a high authority backlink on it, and I decided to create subdomains in that domain. Would the link juice from the high authority backlink on the domain pass to the subdomains that I create? Your thoughts on this matter is much appreciated :).

No, but your subdomain will rank better if the root domain has "authority".

Better off just making a tumblr or something tho.

So you are saying that the main domain doesn't pass link juice, yet you clearly state that authority of the root domain will help the subdomain rank? That's quite a contradictory statement.

Anyways, OP; disregard asap1's paradoxical post.

It is my belief that main domains DO pass power their subdomains.

If you wanna test this in practice yourself, then go create 2 subdomain blogs.
The first on wordpress.com.
The second on whatever else free web2 service you might like.

Enter the same spintax on the blogs, wait for them to index and you will quickly see that the .wordpress blog will outrank the other.
This happends on a consistent basis which leads me to believe that the .wordpress.com blog receives power from it's main domain.

...no it DOES NOT pass LINK JUICE. It passes AUTHORITY.

Similar but different.

And if you think a root domain with a few good links will do anything you are wrong.

OP you are better off making a parasite on another root domain that has AUTHORITY.

Authority is basically how google treats the domain.

If google sees a facebook.com url or tumblr.com sub domain they will rank it better then the average domain and let it get spammed to death because of the authority the domain has.

Link juice - The amount of "link juice" site A passes to site B via hyperlink

Anyway the advantage gained from making a subdomain on your root domain wont be much unless it something like facebook, tumblr, amazon, etc.

So should I add a couple of Sape links to the subdomains for link juice? With the authority link and sape link juice I should be able to receive some better rankings. Just theory crafting that is all ;).
 
You dont have to make a subdomain, why not just use the root domain? Is it already being used?

You can also 301 the expired domain to another parasite and send the SAPE links to the parasite.

I honestly dont think creating a subdomain on your domain will do any good unless it has a good link profile. 1 or 2 good links to the root domain wont help your subdomain.

Not sure I agree. It's a popular theory that's trotted out by popular SEO websites/gurus and Web 2.0 sellers alike but when Google clearly state that a subdomain is treated as a seperate entity to the root domain...how could it possibly pass anything?

I do agree that subdomains are crawled at an increased rate though but I believe that's more closely linked to shared IP addresses than it is because of this so called 'authority'. In a literal sense the Moz metric 'domain authority' is indeed inflated by these links but I suspect that's not the 'authority' that you're referring to.

What is authority to you and what influences it? The number of pages on a website? How many links point at it? Is it mere Moz metric? Because if it's any of those things, subdomains are separate entities and should not be impacted by any of them. I'd love a definitive answer to this but like many things in SEO, I suspect there isn't one.

There needs to be a link to have some linkjuice leak through, otherwise it's more about "good neighbourhood" and being or not being associated with spammy websites and domains. Of course a domain and a subdomain have a lot in common and that needs to be taken into account, but essentially they are indipendent from each other, IMO.
 
Authority is gained in part via the quality of links pointing to your domain, so if it is gaining auth via links it is passing on auth to sub domain via link juice.....
