Does link juice come from root domain?

I tried to look, but couldn't find the answer to this.

Does the root domain matter if the article doesn't have any RD or backlinks? So if I got a backlink in an article from a high DA website, but that article was buried deep on the site with no traffic or backlinks to it, would it still pass over juice? So does the juice from the root domain or the exact URL the article or blog is on

From what I have seen in my years of observation - root domain authority indeed matters. But your page must be linked from the homepage - the deeper the page is, less value will propagate. So you can have one page that is not getting backlinks from external sources but still rank because your root domain is trusted and has authority.

It depends.

1) Relevance
Pages linking to unrelated stuff lose some of their link equity (aka juice), as they are less relevant.

2) Other Links
How many other pages are linked to the home page?
The greater the number of links, the less link equity will be given to each link.

3) Site Architecture / Crawlability
With each level down your page is, a small amount of link equity will be lost
The page should not block crawlers using the robots.txt file and the link should be followed
In a minority of cases, a webmaster may offer you a dud link on an orphaned or a no-indexed page. This page will not be linked to the home page or is not indexed and will receive no link equity.

So let's say, it's on an article and website that's relevant, but the article is not popular and gets buried. Is it still passing juice from the root domain, but just not as effectively? Or is the juice reliant on the exact URL that the backlink is on?

Yes, taking into account all the other factors mentioned above.
So, domain.com/your-page would receive more link equity than domain.com/category-a/your-page.

If that page has internal links, obviously yes. Otherwise, these links are not useful. Also if you get a backlink from nyt, but it doesn't have internal links, it's useless.

Hello

Since you mentioned that the page is not linked anyway, thus it is not going to pass any link juice. You can do some internal linking to pass this juice to other relevant or important pages. Also note that the root domain passes authority.
