Does keyword density matter?

Does keyword density still matter in content? Would it be harmful for SEO to have the same keyword at the rate of 7% in a content I will write?
If you take a look at Kyle Roof's experiments at ranking lorem ipsum content (standard placeholder text) you'll see it can matter little. If your content is for human users, write something that's easier to read. I'd put more stock into readability scores like Flesch than I would keyword density. Content with 7% the same word/phrase will read like shit.

In the past, using a keyword many times in content was important for SEO. Now, search engines are smarter and care more about whether your content is useful and easy to read. So, it's better to use keywords naturally and focus on providing helpful information. Aim for about 1-2% of your content to include your main keyword. Just remember, quality content matters more than how many times you use a keyword.
