Does it work to advertise in the comments?

yes and no, that until you get reported and comments restrictions or your youtube channel get hit by a shadow ban, is a good idea but with a high risk, I believe there is another one and is giving the spotlight to haters, they are watching and commenting your video once is release and trow them a little of hate back is not a bad idea :D so they can give you more watch time and interactions, real fans :D:D

It really depends, like if you want to just randomly say, "Hey, sub my channel," that is not going to be good.

But if you say something related to the video, you can advertise.

I was wondering if anyone has used this method.
You go to all the relevant videos (popular/trending ones) and in the comment
section try to funnel or refer people to come to your own channel.

The way you'd do this is 1) have a youtube channel name that is very catchy or interesting
so when ppl read your name in the comment, they'll want to check it out.
2) post something very controversial or eye catching that will make them want to check it out.
3) not sure if you can post links or if it can deleted or removed, but if you can then paste a link. Most
likely you can't so I'd just stick with 1 and 2. Having a really good catchy username and then commenting
something so spicy that ppl will want to check out your channel and videos.
Trust is a big issue on the Internet

The reason why I think it can work is if you look at some the viral videos, the comments with most likes are pinned at the top (if you have set up that way). Comments even go viral which is why they can get thousands and tens of thousands of likes and replies. So if your comment is at or near the top and that video is getting millions of views, your name/comment is being advertised too since they will see your comment at the top or near the top.
