I've concocted a theory...

I base it all on one simple, tragic story. I have a website with hundreds of serious posts and a couple of joke ones (mainly insulting famous people).

To my dismay, the joke posts do really well month after month.

Can't quite figure it out because of technically enough search volume for those keywords.

What am doing right? And how to I start doing it more often?

It's not only whether your posts are funny or tragic, it's also a matter of the search volume of the keywords you rank for.

Personally, I try to add a small joke here and there or a bit of what I call "personality quirks" to my posts to make them more unique and enjoyable to read.

This is no surprise at all.

One of the essential factors in SEO is user engagement and time spent on the page.

It is obvious fact that people are loving to read that humor content in your site. They are enjoying and hence spending more time on those pages. This is sending a positive signal to search engines about those pages and hence they are climbing up in the rankings. Yours is a really classic example of how organic growth works. Good that you shared your experience here.

I would advice you keep adding such humor pages on your site and I am sure your site will grow exponentially.

Hey, thanks a lot!

I'll try. I just need to find a way to marry those jokes to keywords that have enough volume. Haven't quite figured that part out yet.

I cant speak for the same thing with jokes

but something similar is negativity can get easy traffic.

You would be surprised how often people search things like

"f**k *insert famous person name*"

purely because they want to read opinions from someone who feels the same way.

Most of the time forums will rank for these terms as that is where most people

would put their opinions like this but it is very easy to write a critical article

and outrank everything for that term depending on how famous the person is.

Thousands of actors exist, along with thousands of haters, endless keywords being born
and lost.

People also love to repost your critical articles on forums etc so you end up with people

basically building backlinks for you.

This is one of the few sort of non evergreen niches/ articles ive seen do well with low competition

This doesnt even need to be people, it can be companies too.

Now obviously you run the risk of legal action if you ever spread false information but

the traffic generation is so easy it is a little crazy.

Had a friend from India (im from usa) make a site like this and

was doing well for himself just based on this, and even better when he launched

merch.................. yes, people buy merch about things they hate

(these are not his im just showing examples how how merch in niches like this can look).

Like, he could support his whole family for 3 years on just the money he made selling political merch in

one month. (not regular political merch, the harder hate stuff that you usually cant even advertise much places

F**K *insert political name*).

Articles on hate about something have very high engagement as you are getting readers who already agree with the point of the

article before they even find it.

TLDR:

I personally think both Humor and Hate have odd ways of driving up SEO gains.

(also im not suggesting people should make hate sites, im just putting it out there as I felt it was relevant to this in a way).

You can use SEMRush or Ubersuggest to do some keyword research. Find out the humor related keywords and work on that. Also search for similar site that are posting related content and try to replicate their content in a better way than theirs.

Haha. That actually makes perfect sense. Thanks!
Do you have any advice on how to search for keywords with evergreen content potential around hate?

Probably just aim at things that arent people, like businesses, seasons, etc because those things are unlikely to change quickly.

But things like politicians can become out of date and lose power the moment an election is over etc.

But things like apple and android have had people hating them since they existed.

Nailing down specific keywords isnt easy

Yeah, definitely. I've already added a few posts in that style. in the last couple of weeks.

One of them is doing reasonably well. It's #1 for its main KW, but there isn't a lot of volume there.

Will get back with updates ;)

There is no direct evidence to suggest that humor can improve SEO and drive up traffic. However, using humor in your content can make it more engaging and shareable, which can indirectly lead to improved SEO and increased traffic.

When people enjoy your content and find it entertaining, they are more likely to share it on social media platforms, link to it from their own websites, and mention it in online discussions. This type of engagement signals to search engines that your content is valuable and relevant, which can improve your search engine rankings.

Additionally, incorporating humor into your content can help you stand out from your competitors and create a unique brand voice that resonates with your audience. This can increase brand awareness, loyalty, and customer engagement, all of which can lead to increased traffic and improved SEO over time.

However, it's important to remember that humor is not appropriate for all types of content or audiences, and it should be used thoughtfully and strategically to ensure that it aligns with your brand values and messaging. Ultimately, the key to improving SEO and driving up traffic is to create high-quality, valuable content that meets the needs and interests of your target audience.

Thanks. That actually made a lot of sense.
I've had pretty bland, but informative posts, where people spend a few seconds, get the answer they need & move on with their lives.
