    Hello,

    First time posting.
I have a question about hosting in another country. There has been a debate that hosting within the country you are targeting will help with SEO but there are others that say it doesn't matter where you host because you can select your targeted country with google webmasters, esp. since Google is the dominating SE. I would like to know what BHW members think.

    Thanks!

Doesn't matter - especially after setting the target in Webmaster's Tools. But people tend to use as near hosting as possible to make the sites load faster. Typically this doesn't really matter (I run multiple sites with different hosts both in EU and US - myself being in Asia, never had any major issues or slowness), but it's stil better to eliminate the geographical distance if possible.

If you want to target locally, use country specific domain. This will improve a lot,

I dont know about the hosting, but it can affect the loading speed of your website.

Google webmaster target audience also helps a lot to target country specific visitors.

I have moved hosting to Canada (where I live) on some sites and seen a huge boost in the serps for those sites on google.ca When I moved them back to a U.S. based hosting setup the boost was lost and they dropped back down. I've done this on 3 different occassions so I know it wasn't a fluke. I haven't done it in probably 3 or 4 years so I don't know for sure if it still works.

It does matter..hosting in the country you target helps. I'm not saying it will determine everything but every little thing in SEO helps. My experience at least :)

I absolutely agree and can report similar results. I had a site that was hosted in Canada and was on page 1 for major search terms for google.ca and on page 2 for google.com.

Switched to US based hosting, and the situation reversed - in fact, the site lost some major rankings for the .ca version of Google (which I was not too worried about as more traffic came from .com anyhow).

It does matter, and you should try and get quality links from that country websites.

I'd guess some things which matter more than hosting are

    1) geotargetting in webmaster tools / via html code
    2) language your site is in (definately something google obviously takes into consideration)
    3) backlink anchors language

I use hosting from the country I target and that strategy seems to treat me right.

As long as you're setting your target country in webmaster tools or via a country specific TLD i don't find a problem. For example i've got tons of .uk sites hosted on both UK and US sites and i can't say i've noticed any difference in rankings between the two. Also, it may help to ensure the meta language of your site matches that of the target country, i.e. en-GB for UK.
