Does homepage less likely to rank now?

It depends on the homepage content. Most homepages can rank but seem not to be meant for this except for brand purposes (making it worse when trying to rank for EMDs)
Most of my homepages are superstar ranking pages because they are meant to do so.

Depends if you go balls in on your homepage, some homepages have 10k+ words of content in them, of course they will rank for something.

Everthing depends on your page's content , your onpage , off page , links. You can rank your home page too if it is optimized for the keyword.
