does having an a large home page is good idea?

If you have a site with amazon affiliate in it then yes is a good idea to have it long...but the SEO optimize text on it to be long not with tons of plugins or any other uneccesarely vc elements.

So it does not matter for ranking in itself too much imho. The question is rather, what is your homepage page, is your homepage your landing page, is it a sales page, or is it used to channel clicks within your silo? After all homepage is just a page.

But in general for the type of sites in this forum, yes you want content on the homepage, rather more than less, for relevancy, long tail traffic, etc. So you can always add to your HP at any time, it does not hurt (or should not).
