Does Google want you to do SEO on your pages to make them more scannable and searchable? Or, do they just want you to make good content, and to let the chips fall where they may?

Their goal is to provide users with the most relevant search results possible for their queries. To do so they need you to follow their guidelines so they can index your website properly and if valuable or relevant, to show it to the search engine users if they search for a term on which your site is relevant.

That's the main idea and their goal. Reality is kinda different :)

They need you to do some SEO, as if you never did any SEO you would be undiscoverable. But ideally they want websites to do a minimal amount of SEO and let web users do the most of the sharing and linking naturally. They haven't got to the point were they can rank websites without links and it will be a long time until they can do so. On page SEO also helps the search engine work out what an article is about and serve the article to users, thus bringing them relevant results. SEO won't be dead for a long time.

Building links yourself is considered blackhat.

Even pureWhiteHatSeo is considered blackhat cause you build links.
You build links cause you want to manipulate the engine's results.

As long as the results change from building backlinks there will be no "better user experience".

Cause I might have the knowledge of what SEO is and do the necessary steps to rank (like backlinks)
and someone that has the best article/video/content for the g0ogle user, ranks in the 10th page.

The "high quality author" (according to go0gle) will never be found if he doesn't build links.
So he doesn't only need to bring the best user experience but he needs to learn SEO too. So...? Quality my @ss.

They would better say "We need someone to deliver the the best user experience to someone but also know how to build backlinks, which in the end, we are against it."
Go0gle logic.

SEO = Search Engine Optimisation...Google is the search engine, and they want you to optimise your websites to suit their needs! So yes, they want you to do it, but what we want is money and sales and google doesn't care much about that...

Also, G doesn't really care about user experience, they just want to be the most-used search engine in the world, and the way they do that is by providing the most "useful" content. So basically, we work our asses off to give them great content so they can make BILLIONS from it. Yay.

No, they want you to use adwords, so they can make money. ;)

After penguin and panda update, you know that some stupid and irrelevant sites rank on search engines. They want people to click more on adwords, so they make more and more money.

Just my 2 cents.

of course they do. If you don't do the SEO, it will be difficult for the searchers find out your site.

In SEO what kind of backlinks are to be build and they provide the direct links to the websites?
I am looking to do SEO for my website as being new in business please provide some more details.
Thanks

I do feel that the statement "backlinking yourself is blackhat" is true. It is the idea that you are making your website more important than another website artificially. I would assume Google is in the pursuit of only putting 'important' websites that have been backlinked naturally by the general public. But in reality, who gives a crap.

Big G sure doesn't as long as they are making money!

Google consider those sites very good who are updating their pages and posting new content but it is not mean that you will make more back links in the short time. Google hate this thing.
