Does getting this really matter?

Hey guys, I'm about to buy a domain and hosting for my site, but I was wondering if getting a domain withcom at the end really mattered? If it's taken, would it hurt future traffic to get something thats like, ca or co or biz? Or others?

Any top leveldomain name (COM/NET/ORG) is always to prefer but it really depends on many factors.

Depends of course on what you are looking for. Lets take a common example, you decided to join a PPD network and you want to make a landing page, for example named 'fifa 13 generator' if you would have the domain name 'fifa13generator.com' or fifa13generator.tk/fifa13generator.blogspot.com, many people would not trust these free domains thus exit, leaving potential income behind. If only 10 people that were to complete your survey left, this would be around $10. You can easily get a domain at GoDaddy or Namecheap for $0.99 so yes, I would recommend a domain.

As for free hostig, it depends. If you have a large amount of traffic your free host might be too slow or might be cancelled. There is also a large risk of these free hosts cancelling, as they do not have sufficient income. Furthermore if the free hosts would be down %10 of the time this means %10 less traffic, thus %10 less income.

Thank you both for your replies. I am not worried about hosting or domains as I can pay for both. I was only worried about risking getting bad traffic if I don't get a decent domain

com is better by far

other tld's don't look professional to the end user , I have seen a few big websites moving from cc tld to dotcom .

Well, if you're trying to brand it as a company or something, you'd be wise to get a .com. However, SEO-wise, .com,.net,.org, and .co are pretty equal and no one is going to view your site negatively because of it.

It used to matter, but now it doesn't matter that much.
If you can't find a cm, other tld are fine too.

COM NET ORG are the TLDs that everyone used to build sites with and if you check Google search results in most cases we see COM s appear all the time and It's very rare to see other TLDs like WS TK CC and sub-domains to appear on search results so if you consider about SEO value of your new site COM NET or ORG is the way to go.

.com is the best option in most cases.
