Does G Punish Your Ranking for Running Popups/unders?

I would say its a bad thing to do lol.

It will make your site look spammy/low quality and google doesn't like that.

Pleasing Google = Higher SERPs lol :D

And yet... sites like TVGuide.com and many other large corporate high profile sites are full of popups and popunders. While at the same time popup and popunder ads are the biggest promotion strategy for companies like Netflix .

I hate how guys running smaller sites are held to a higher standard than the corporate entertainment sites. When we do it our sites are called spammy, when they do the same thing it's called smart marketing strategies.

Yup, double standards suck.
 
Well.. has anyone actually done any test or we're all just speculating? And yes, even sites like nytimes.com use popunders.
 
I had some experieces with losing rankings when using pop ups, but it was temporary only and I can't be 100% sure it was because of popups. So, my answer is maybe! :D
 
I recently started using a popup on my site...no change in ranking, but the bounce rate went from 50 to 5%.

So far so good...
 
Sometimes popunders can get your site flagged for viruses... I've had that happen to me when using Clicksor. They tend to not have very stringent standards for their advertisers. I had to contact the anti virus company and request manual removal from their index (which they granted).

Overall, I don't think it will have a huge impact on serps... However, having to many ads on your site can effect serps.

Just to be safe I make popunder code not load for search bots and encrypt the ad code.
 
If you use Aweber for your in page popup's do you get penalized for that too?
 
I've started using some popunders (they appear as popups on the new firefox due to a firefox bug :( ) and my bouncerate hasn't changed at all
 
Haven't had any problems with popunders. Popups, outside of offering value to the page (like a free/discount offer for your services/products) or an email optin, are just annoying and I won't use them.
 
I wouldn't attach any google analytics code inside them, use somebody different to track it..
