I found an expired domain, though name of the domain is not quite same as my niche but it has solid backlink from big relevant website, do you think I should go for buy and redirect, I am worried it won't be negative SEO?

Yes and no.

One of the last updates somewhat killed it. It’s the same as it once was.

It’s still a workable strategy, just not nearly as effective in my experience.

Yes , but the last update screwed the expired domains well and you are talking for non relevant which is High ALERT

if it has relevant backlinks from authority sites that are related to the niche you want to build, it is a good buy

Yes, but the last update punished lot of expired domain but, it work's great even now.

Many purchased expired domain from a non niche relevant domains have got struck with this update.
try to be smart always, for this era of SEO you should have a content and backlinks and reffering domains from your niche relevant source.
try to compete if you have a high competition.
your ranks and business will develop automatically.

May be yes or no.

Because the last update have screwed many expired domain websites. So be careful with that.

If you want to buy backlink then it should have relevant backlinks from authority sites that are related to the niche you want to build. then you will get benefit from this.

Redirect won't do much if anything. If you set up a new website on this domain name you could get something from it. Not sure if possible after recent google update. Make sure it is not popular topic.

Absolutely yes. And it will always work, it's the terms of the http protocol, and has nothing to do with Google or anything else. The other question is how you use it, so that you don't get penalized, but get the maximum benefit.

The highlighted point is the danger here.

If it is completely different from the niche you are going to focus then it will be a problem.

If it is relevant then fine to proceed.
