Does domain age pass with a 301 redirect?

I purchased a website six years ago that has many relevant links (120+), but I have never used the website. The domain even includes the main keyword in its name. Yesterday, I bought a new domain with a similar name that contains the branded and keyword name, making the business more brandable. I did a 301 redirect from Namecheap. The old domain is six years old and has relevant links. Does the domain age also transfer to the new domain?

Some of the competitors in this niche are ranking with 20+ do-follow links, but their websites are 3+ years old.

The only problem I have with the old domain is the name, this is why:

old website is called: brand-keyword.com, I redirected to a new website with brandmainkeyword.com

The "brand" part matches the "brand" on the new domain as well.

Just forget that you know anything about a technique called 301 and your life will be much better mate. :)
 
If you use 301 redirect, the authority and backlinks from old domain will impact your new one in a positive way, but you can do as @Nargil said. It will be less of work and more time saving

Your new website benefits from the old one's links, but it might take a bit for everything to settle in search results after the change.
 
the purpose of 301s is actually redirecting the links to your new domain/pages,
basically, when google recrawl any of the old domain links, they will be pointing(redirecting) to your website,

so the old domain age, content, content relevancy, etc... won't really matter,
as much as the links, anchors, the websites/pages where are the links are located, etc...
well, at least for the sake of the purpose of making the 301, you still want a relevant clean domain here,

surely making a redirect from some old spammy irrelevant website even with clean link profile that meets your needs will rise some red flags,
but that's not the main part to focus on, you need to have these checked & in point & focus more in the links pointing to the website & authority
 
Thank you for the help guys, I will keep the old domain, I removed the 301 redirect yesterday, it was up for 1 day only thankfully.
 
A 301 redirect transfers some SEO value from the old domain, but not the age itself. The good news is the 120+ links you mentioned do get transferred and can help your new domain

I don't understand why you are removing the 301 as it would still transfer the link juice to the new domain.

Exactly, this is why I don't understand removing the 301.

Just because age does not transfer does not mean the 301 is a bad thing.

No, domain age doesn't pass with 301 but I am sure trustworthiness does. But age is an element of trust so the lack of old age is easily more than counterbalanced by high trust from links and social signals.

Also, I have observed that new domains get a window of love from Google during which they perform well then enter sandbox later on if no links were acquired through press releases.
