I say deep linking works. I have a local Real Estate site focused on a big metropolitan area I live in. But I'm surrounded with a bunch of little cities which no body focuses on. But there is plenty of clients searching for those key terms. I do pretty well for the Big City Real Estate keywords. But then decided to create some little city information pages for my site. Created some links and wallah I'm ranking on the first page for every little city I focused on in a matter of 30 days. So I say deep linking works. Hope this will motivate someone to get better. Good Luck.

Yes, deep linking works, and it works incredibly if you do it right.

Make sure you lace in all of your deep links into your sitemap.

Also, if you don't already have one, put a blog that is SEO'ed to the max on your site, update it daily, provide at least one link in that blog entry that deep links to one of your smaller city pages.

Don't forget to ping as many services as possible when you make your daily posts.

im a fan of deep links in the footer of every page as well and also tag/category/date based pages that are noindex, follow but get a ton of craptastic links poured into them so you make sure that the link juice is spread around quite a bit rather than bulking up on any specific page too much
