So a canonical passes down link juice to the tagged url (pretty much or entirely like how a 301 does), but does it also pass down penalty?

Any link that passes juice will pass a penalty, therefore a canonical will pass the penalty.

Linking penalised sites to non penalised sites even through a nofollow is a practice best avoided. Admit defeat, forget the penalised site & start again.

I don't consider this to be accurate - otherwise I'd just link a penalized site and, hey presto, I've tanked whoever I link to. Not so logical, that one.

Can I ask a question? If I set a canonical tag on a post, will it take the link juice of where it came from and not just the post? Example the post is on the homepage, would it inherit the link juice from the home page or from the single post only? Gonna build myself a private army of canonical-ed pages and see what happens :)

    Hi I tried Redirect Twice
First with automatic penalty from google algorithm an I succeed the visitors raised .
Second was with Manual Action And the Penalty passed to the new site .
So 301 redirect are depending in what penalty you got .

After testing this canonical vs 301 on penalized sites (over 20) we can definitively say this is not something you'll want to waste much time on. Google passes penalty on both redirects AND rel=canonical.

I am been reading info about canonical and in most of the cases, they say it act same as 301.
It would be interesting to see if someone has any experience with this.

I've got two of my sites hit with manual penalty saying site-wide matches and unnatural links. So is there any way out using 301 or Canonical ? Generally how much time does google takes to catch the new site if i redirected to penalized site to new one ? What if i redirect the penalized site to new one and revert the canonical after 3 weeks which i think is the time google takes to catch me and again after one week canonical to new site ?

Nah, he's right. a 301 does indeed pass a penalty. You should not redirect a domain with a link penalty to the new one. You apply the penalty to the new domain.

You have to break the 301 connection. Break the 301 and file a reconsideration request.

So for example... Cant you just pass a link penatly to lets say sarchengineland.com or another site with high PR?
    What would happen then?
