Any link that passes juice will pass a penalty, therefore a canonical will pass the penalty.
I don't consider this to be accurate - otherwise I'd just link a penalized site and, hey presto, I've tanked whoever I link to. Not so logical, that one.
Hi I tried Redirect TwiceInterested in knowing the answer as well ...
Any 301 experts ?

I've got two of my sites hit with manual penalty saying site-wide matches and unnatural links. So is there any way out using 301 or Canonical ? Generally how much time does google takes to catch the new site if i redirected to penalized site to new one ? What if i redirect the penalized site to new one and revert the canonical after 3 weeks which i think is the time google takes to catch me and again after one week canonical to new site ?
I have never heard of anyone being penalised for having it on every page. Plus I can't see that ever happening unless it has been implemented incorrectly of course. So a canonical passes down link juice to the tagged url (pretty much or entirely like how a 301 does), but does it also pass down penalty?
