Does Bookmarking even work anymore?

Bookmarkings main purpose has never been, and never will be, to get an increase in traffic (at least not directly).
Bookmarking has always been (at least for us BH'ers) for the backlinks you get from them...more backlinks equals better SERP position...better SERP position equals more traffic.
But bookmarking alone as your backlink building method isn't enough. You must diversify.

Social bookmarking may get you a simple short term traffic increase if the content is quality but a day or two later it will no longer receive traffic. It's all about the backlinks.
I use bookmarking sites to get traffic to my articles and clicks on my links. Hopefully the end result is that they buy something from me and my rankings increase... People really love to subscribe to your bookmark feeds, which help spread your links around virally. Find 5-10 bookmarking sites. Use them with every article that you create. They work better for articles...
Bookmarking buy itself if not going to get you serp increases but having it in your link profile can only help. Also having them to your 2nd tier link pages does get them indexed and can only help as well.

its just a indirect way to get traffic as every backlink counts in search engine while deciding your website usefulness, credibility and rankings

Well, I guess I will have to be the voice of dissention on this point, as I feel anyone who is using bookmarking solely to generate backlinks must be totally missing the point.
To me, no matter what your SEO strategy looks like on paper, or in design it always has the end-goal of increasing traffic. In fact, contrary to what everyone else is saying, I use bookmarking to grab traffic.
When you can identify hot trending topics, and you post content to a solid base point such as a blogger, hubpages, squidoo, or your own authority site, what you can often find is that bookmarking those drives their immediate search engine placement up, and you can snag A LOT of traffic. Obviously it's less effective on long-term expected trends.
I wouldn't recommend using ONLY bookmarking as your SEO vehicle, unless you ONLY target keywords the way I've suggested above, and of course - it's short-term money. But hey - short term $100+ days add up quite nicely too.
Do some long-term stuff though too.

I've had very positive results with bookmarking only. It's important to consider the keywords you are targeting and the level of your competition. My success with it, it's been MAINLY in a local level.
Other thing to consider is the websites used and overall number of bookmarks you are creating. Guidelines? It really depends of the keywords... I've been successful with as little as 150 (For Local Market).
I never cared too much about the PR of these websites or how known they are. I believe a mix of them always seems more natural to the search engines.

The traffic you get depends on the social bookmarking site. Have you tried the list from SENuke? Also, I agree that the main purpose is backlinks.

Bookmarks are PR juice. ANd bloody good they are to. They add credibility to your site.
They should form part of a traffic/rank strategy. You need to set up a good link structure (and bookmark this as well - in fact bookmark your links more than you bookmark your main URL)
I know I drone on about this, but IM takes work, there is no magic "one product" High quality links, boosted by low quality links, boosted by submissions and bookmarking and supported by good SEO and based on a foundation of solid keyword research.
Unless you are very lucky you will fail if you ******** up any of these steps.
