Your own personal PBN will likely always be better than one that any Tom, Dick and Harry can buy links on.

Agreed, but you also need to consider cost advantage with shared PBN.

Save your money or start your own, seriously. I lost a few thousand dollars on the marketplace from "trying" services. Tbh, most don't work and in the few times that they do "work", the probably won't be as good as you expected.
Maybe if your niche is super low comp you can go ahead and use a few links but in most cases, you should use your own (especially after the recent update)

please build your own. Try and start with low competition keywords which can make you few hundred bucks in a month or two. Then invest that money in a bigger PBN and try to rank for higher competition keywords and make more money. But those services where everyone buys works only for like few months and then get hammered.

PBN should be private (unless you are buying links). Avoid "shared" PBNs. Better buy links from trusted sellers then build shared PBNs with complete strangers.

Going after "cost advantage" with PBNs will be your downfall. If you have the money to spend, then don't look at the budget too much when building your own PBN. It' significantly safer. It's not 100% safe, because there will always be risks, but it's safer by far than a public PBN. Especially these days after all this Fred drama that's getting on my nerves.
