So, there's an aged domain I'm looking into getting, but its been dropped 5 times. Will this hurt its reputation with Google (being dropped)

under whois.domaintools it says "30 records have been archived since 2001"

Also, a snip from the WHOIS

PtrHu

Yes, it means Google resets the age clock on each drop.

Is there a way to find out when the last drop was, and what its real age is?

5 drops? Yeah thats alot

Yeah, its definitely a lot.

But, if I'm really interested in the domain itself, not just the age, is it ok to buy it?

I mean, will it be hurt by the drops and constant nameserver/ip changes?

Imo (and I stress the imo part). The age is shot but just because it been dropped alot doesn't mean you don't get the link value of the backlinks. The value of the old links should show themselves after the next PR update.

So imo if you want the domain go for it. JUst don't expect any aged value from it.

would say worst case scenario it wouldn`t be any worse than a brand new domain

only other possibility is if it was recently deindexed and dropped, however even then they likely have a filter in place to notice that

The domain hasn't had any link building, I just like the name a lot.

Thanks. I site: and info: it, and its indexed.

Really? Were does Google say they reset the clock with every drop?

On the other hand, here is Google's Matt Cutts saying Google doesn't rely on WHOIS records and uses their own database records (even though they are a Registrar themselves) of when they first saw the domain to determine age.

If Google scraped this website in 2001 and it dropped 11 times (every year) it will still be an 11 yr old domain in Google's eyes. If you don't want to believe Matt Cutts then buy one and hammer the hell out of it with backlinks that will ban any new domain and you'll see these old domains are given a lot of leeway and rarely suffer the penalties of new domains. Also see how fast they get indexed and can competitively rank for difficult keywords.

Anyone that tells you an 11 year old domain becomes a new domain because it when through a recent drop doesn't have a clue what they're talking about. But I do like them discouraging competition to my domain buying hobby :D

glad I stressed the imo part in my previous post ; )

lol, But that still doesn't mean for sure that the age is saved... It means that its a mystery, and until someone does a case study by blasting dropped age and aged domains, we won't probably know.

True. I have quite a few drops in a couple of my private network sites. I wonder how I could test this?

Simply check the whois..it does not mean, that domain really dropped. If you want to see the date, check it in whois. "Created date" or something similar is record you are looking for. This domaintools drops might mean that domain was just deleted from the zone, but than was caught by some dropcatching company for instance. Just check whois date to see when domain was registered, but anyhow..from my point of view it is not that big deal even if it was deleted )
