In internet marketing, developers earn the most (or almost the most). One must know how to market & sell one's services and that is where the magic is.

Being able to automate/optimise/scale any process will help make you money in the long run but it's not an absolute requirement. Alot of the time it would be more effective to pay someone else if you have the capital, thay way you can have several plates spinning.
