Maybe authority was reduced a little but I don't think that articles directories are worthless.

I continually use article directories for diversifying my links. I have one site that I started 7 months ago and it only consists of Wordpress blog sites, article directories (ams, article dashboard, ezine, article friendly etc.) and I am ranking very well with many of my keywords. So don't count article directories out all together. A good linking strategy is to diversify your link campaign.

As someone said above it's about link diversity, for me anyway. Yeah you're not going to get the same beef you used to submitting to AMR directories since the update, but nothing beats link diversity. So for what the bot costs it's worth it for me to stay undger Big Gs radar.

They still work but not as well as they once did. Article marketing is still very effective if you can use it on private sites through services like build my rank. I have close to 200 high PR sites that I use to place my spinned articles on and it works incredibly well.
I have a full time seo guy who is using build my rank, article rank and all those private networks for my site for almost 6 months and it has been going great. I always get my post indexed in 5 min with out pinging and usually they rank good for those keywords.

One thing I have been doing is after I post some spun articles I hit most of the articles with some backlinks. Usually just some small level SB blasts.
