hey i was wondering if anyone here uses MagicJack?

also it says you have to have your computer on all the time. won't that hurt the computer in time and also run up your electric bill or can you put it in hibermode and will it still work then.

i'm thinking about going with them maybe.

    thanks.

I use it and it works like a champ. I leave my computer on all the time, just blank out the monitor after 20 mins of inactivity.

Your phone won't work if your internet goes out. Where as typically with a regular phone you'd still have a connection so you might want to consider that. Also, your right about the electric bill because your computer always needs to be on so you'll see an increase there. And yes, it's bad to leave your computer on for extended periods of time. I would say that a computer should be shutdown at least once a day for maximum life span.

I don't think its bad to leave your computer on but that is my opinion and I can show you 100 experts that would agree and you could probably find 100 experts that say you should turn it off. I think the only advantage to turning it off daily is the elec bill but thats not much to me.

I think turning it off daily will reduce the life of your components. You have electrical components that will heat up & cool off daily and some components over time like mem modules can become unseated but this is over a long time. They will last longer if running at a constant temp. Then you have the hard drives which are spinning at 10000 rpms and you want to bring those up to speed and then shut them down daily? This is a heck of a lot more wear & tear than if you just leave them running 24 / 7.

These are just my opinions from my experiences but it seemed like I always have less problems with pcs that ran all the times than with the ones that people turned off everyday.

The ones that were turned off seemed like we would replace more mem modules & hard drives.

Servers I especially would never shut down. Sometimes when you have to move one and had to shut it down, thats when a hard drive would fail. Sometimes you go to start them back up and you will hear the drive start to make funny noises.

I have a couple computers that I leave on 24/7 and they have been running for about 9 years. Of course you still need to re-boot once in a while to clear out the cobwebs:)

So I am definitely going for the magic jack as soon as I can transfer my existing number to it. Last time I checked you couldn't but they said you could soon.
