Being that he's a super moderator it seems odd that he wouldn't be active here anymore.

I don't mean to pry at personal details - I know he mentioned in his journey thread that he was going through some personal troubles.

Does anybody know him in real life? Is he at least OK?

No offense to OP but when people become inactive without notifying, they probably are too busy. So, lets just leave it

He pops in IRC every so often to chat. He's around occasionally, just probably busy with other things
