Electrician/plumber here... but I would rather take an ass whooping before doing any plumbing again. I love electrical work... Especially troubleshooting, it might take awhile but no problem has ever whooped my ass.

Cooking is a new hobby of mine and steak is my passion... I envy you as a a butcher cause I only fry that shit mid-rare. As a butcher you get to know what is truly good product.

I was doing a lot of things in my life - from loading bread at 6AM and finishing my PhD at 27 years. But nothing is comparing with being a father - this is my primary JOB now. There is nothing much harder and much competitive then to be father.
Having money, respect and fame is nothing comparing to have the respect of your own child.
About what I'm doing :) can't publish it here yet ;)

I agree with this so much! Most "men" these days are lacking in the DIY department. They would rather pay someone to do it. How sad. I would feel like a real sissy!

A soldering gun is the first thing on my list of things to buy when I move into the new house with my (soon to be) wife. DIY is definitely an ego boost.
 
Yes I know what you mean, when my hadron collider needs fixing I just do it myself. Just reinforces that good old saying 'if you want something done right you have do do it yourself'.

I disagree somewhat. I'm all for paying someone else to cook for me, and mow my lawn and do my tedious chores. That's fine. But I also like knowing that I can fend for myself. The day you have to rely on someone, they will let you down. I like to always have a plan B.
 
That is precisely how I learnt internet marketing.

However history and a lot learning the hard way has taught me I suck at DIY :P
 
i like to try my hand at most things, but always prefer to outsource my bj's.

Remember the feeling when you hit your first dime online? That's the kind of feeling I get everytime I repair what is considered junk by 99% of people.
 
I fixed my mountain bike last week, well proud moment.

For me, if there isnt a keyboard, mouse and screen I tend to leave it to the 'skilled professionals'
 
@op: check the bearings, I had one go down last week and the only issue was the bearings.

For me, being able to DIY isn't meant to be "cost-effective", it's a fun experience and is something I've loved for a long time. There's just something satisfactory about being able to fix something you knew nothing about a day ago.
 
Depends. I like to know how to do stuff, then again if you expect me to be able to repair a TV or stuff that requires actual knowledge of complex things (e.g. electronics) you can bet i'm going to destroy the thing if I'd try to fix it. Besides that, I only go DIY if i'm having fun doing it. For most stuff I prefer somebody else to do it, preferably a specialist. Sadly, most specialists are actually complete morons who lack even most basic common sense. From trying to put a 5mm cable through a 4mm hole all the way to doing the job in the most unoptimal or bad way possible.

About those who think being a DIY guy makes you a man or that not being DIY means you're not a man... grow the fu*k up!

it's better to hire someone who knows that they are doing or buy a used one on CL than to waste time figuring out how to fix something.
 
Time is money and money is time. If anything disrupts this peaceful harmony of mine I SET IT ON FIRE. Yea I used to be like this when i was younger but not anymore. I was forced to focus on things when my peace was disturbed.
