SEO sites and ''gurus'' will tell you to do great content, outreach, ask for guest posts etc and tell you that most links are earned organically.

How are you supposed to earn links organically if no one can find your content because you have no link and thus no organic traffic lol? And when starting out, I doubt any reputable site will want to link to a random blog with no traffic.

Is there even such a thing as legitimate white hat link building? I'm sure the SEO sites have done their fair share of blackhat too...

there's no such thing as white hat link building. As soon as you've built / bought a single link you've gotten into black hat.

But there are sites that acquire links organically. If the content is good and google ranks you based on content you will get those organic links. But it might take a long time

All link building is blackhat.
For one of my site I build a few profile links and a wiki. That snowballed and I am getting organic links now.
Also niche is narrow and I am it got quality content compared to competition.

Reading your thread makes me believe that you are a fresher just starting into blogging and IM, pls correct me if I am wrong. :)

If not then have you built a site with quality content (with images and videos if possible)? If yes, how old is it?

You mentioned "organic links", so my friend, organic links are attracted to good quality content and they take time to build up. So have patience.

Don't worry, Google will discover your content and if it is good enough it will fetch organic natural links too.
And yes, you can call such links as 'White Hat Links' ;)

If your random blog has a valuable article covering the topic very efficiently, other blogs will run after taking a link to your blog.

Technically, reaching out to other content creators, guest posting, offering research and knowledge for a reference etc. is considered whitehat.

But no one is going to care about that when you start out. You have to build up authority first, then go whitehat.

I guess this only works if you're going for low comp keywords where you can ramk manually. Then at some point in time, you can build up trust and authority but that would take a lot of time.
