I've been seeing mixed opinions on anchor text lately.

Some SEOs still prefer a natural mix of branded, URL, partial match and keyword anchors, while others say Google understands context well enough that strict anchor ratios aren't as important anymore.

For those actively building links in 2026:

Are you still paying attention to anchor diversity? Or are you focusing more on relevance and the quality of the referring domain?

Google is much better at understanding context now, so a contextual link from a highly relevant page often moves rankings more than forcing exact-match anchors. That said, repeatedly using the same money keyword is still one of the easiest ways to create an unnatural footprint.

Agreed relevance and context seem to matter more now, while keeping anchors naturally varied helps avoid an obvious pattern.

I still care about anchor diversity, but I prioritize relevance and link quality first. A natural mix of branded, URL, and partial-match anchors usually looks safer than forcing exact-match keywords.

Short answer is that it matters. It'll always appear odd if you have all your anchors to be the same keywords/phrases. The plane is to not appear as though you're gaming the system. Even though Google is smarter today and the entire landscape has actually changed.

I still keep anchors varied, but I don’t follow strict ratios. For me, relevance and referring domain quality come first, with a natural anchor mix supporting that.

anchor text diversity still matters in 2026, but not in the old-school sense of trying to hit an exact percentage for every anchor type

Varied anchors is still good, don't always rely on Google, that's my opinion.
