for onpage SEO, does adding image in a post or embedding a youtube video in your article help increase SERP/SEO?

if so, why?

Yes definately it rocks site , because your post will be in more professional way . And google loves this .

If you have images on your website your site can also be found through the google image search

An image with alt tags definitely helps. Just put alt descriptions using your keywords. Don't just stuff them btw like <img src="imagename.gif" width="10" height="10" alt="acai berries, acai, acai berry, I love acai berries, acai berries are amazing, acai, acai, acai">.

Since Google uses a ton of onsite algorithms to check quality, I am sure that the presence of an embedded video would help.

MOST DEFINITELY, The key is to optimize the images. The title being the most important, followed by alt tags, and description. If your going to upload a YT video make it your own. You can put a link inside the description for some good juice. Always start your title with your keyword.

Yes, that would definitely help you, for the reasons listed above and more. The more varied your content, the better for traffic, every time. As people have mentioned, if you have images on your site you will be findable in a Google images search. Secondly, if you have this kind of content on your site it helps your bounce rate. It grabs attention and makes people stop to take more in.

In addition to that, adding tags to the image helps your SEO and, this cannot be emphasized enough, Google loves variety. Quality unique content, plus images, plus good keywords and Google will be very happy.
