Yes, they do, but by using the correct practices,
Things take time, but ideally, you should be aiming to do that with really high authority and a clean domain within the same niche
- You have to limit the number of domains involved, though too many can get your website down
- Restore the website before making the 301, let it age for at least a month to gain back the previous authority
- 301 all of the top pages to similar ones,
You don't want to 301 all of the previous domain pages to the homepage,
Recover them and create similar ones on your website within the same topic, then 301 each to the matching one

Not like it used to but yes, it works. Make sure the expired domain is from same niche and has powerful links.

Yes it works, but do it in a different way. First make the site live, add it to the console and then re-direct it to the desired site.

it does work I have done it for my client
it is an effective method since it pass the Traffic & DA to your domain
but you have to wait until the page is been crawled or make the domain live add quality content and then re-direct it to relevant page in your site as @hideath said which will have a good effect

A 301 redirect passes all ranking power from the old URL to the new URL so obviously it works.

My experience:
I've been running two websites. I redirected website A to website B.
B started to rank for the keywords A had already talked about along with ranking for its own keywords.
A and B are running in different niches, but Google didn't care about them and ranked them for various irrelevant keywords.
When I stopped the redirection, everything became normal.
But the authority of the redirecting domain should be good enough to pass the power to the targeting domain.

It still works, but be careful don't buy too many domains. Actualy the first comment explained everything in detail for you. if you follow it, you should be fine!

Thanks for the clean breakdown. I want to start using 301 redirects for my cornerstone content. I was unsure if I was to purchase the domain and just do a simple redirect, or if I was to redevelop the URLs from the expired domain and then redirect the pages to my site.
Quick Question-
- So basically the main page of the URL that is being redirected would remain, and I would be redirecting the inner pages to my website's page.
- Or could I just redirect the entire domain name to my website's inner page?
