Always. You have to protect your work, especially from people who don't really respect intellectual property. Besides, let's be honest - a good meme flying over the internet is like an ad campaign for free

No, watermarks can be removed easily. Waste of time imho.

Always! that will not prevent from other people to use your content as their own but it will make it more difficult for people to use it because they will have to edit it to remove the watermarks and if you dont have that much knowledge on it then it will give you trouble doing in it.
You can automate it. My scheduler bot watermarks images then uploads them to Imgur.
