Do you update anchor text strategy during a campaign?

While working on link building campaigns, I’ve noticed that anchor text strategy can make a big difference over time. In the beginning some people focus more on branded or generic anchors, and then slowly introduce keyword anchors later.

From my experience, keeping the anchors mixed usually makes the link profile look more natural.

Just curious how others handle this during a campaign, do you plan anchor distribution from the start or adjust it as the campaign grows?

I adjust it as I go.

Start safe with branded/generic, then slowly add keyword anchors once things look stable.

Anchor strategy should evolve with the campaign, not stay fixed. Begin with safe anchors, then layer in partial and exact matches once the page gains authority. Always monitor movement, if rankings stall, tweak anchors instead of just adding more links.

I usually plan a rough mix from the start, but keep it flexible. Early on I stick mostly to branded and generic anchors, then slowly add some partial match once things look stable. Exact match I keep very limited. Main thing is keeping it natural and not over-optimizing. I adjust based on how the site is responding over time.

I usually set a rough anchor text plan from the start to avoid over-optimization, but keep it flexible as the campaign progresses. Early on, I lean more toward branded and generic anchors, then gradually mix in keyword anchors based on how the site responds. Keeping it natural and diverse is always the priority.

you pretty much answered your own question lol

most people who are good at this plan a rough distribution from the start but stay flexible. like 60-70% branded/naked url, 20-30% generic ("click here," "this site"), and then sprinkle in exact match keywords sparingly. the people who get slapped by google are the ones who go ham on exact match anchors because they're impatient.

i usually map out a loose ratio at the start of a campaign and then adjust based on what the existing backlink profile looks like. if a site already has a ton of branded anchors, i might push slightly more keyword-rich ones earlier. if it's a fresh domain with like 4 links, i'm keeping it boring for a while.

competitor anchor profiles matter a lot. I'll reverse check the top 3 ranking pages before deciding how aggressive to go with exact match. if the niche is already spammy with anchors, you have more room to push. if competitors are mostly branded, stay conservative.

Yes, I tweak it as I go. If I see too many exact anchors, I switch to more branded or generic ones. keeps the profile looking natural and avoid issues..
