Do You Think AI Tools Are Making Us Lazier or Smarter?

Lately I’ve noticed how much I rely on AI tools for writing, coding help, even organizing daily tasks. It definitely saves time, but I also catch myself wondering if I’m thinking less because the machine fills in the gaps for me.

Some friends argue it makes them smarter, since they can learn faster with AI as a guide. Others say it’s making people dependent, kind of like using GPS so much you forget how to navigate without it.

Curious what you think: is AI helping us build skills, or are we slowly giving up the effort to think deeply for ourselves?

Everything makes us dependent, a modern house is definitely one of most required thing but we don't think that's making us lazier. LLMs are tools, use them where they are good.

It is all about the person, AI or the any tech will continue to develop to make things easier while you will get lazier and dependent to it more. Our age requires a will to choose on how you develop beyond these things.

Well i think they are making us more smarter, faster and sometimes cheaper. It also vary person to person. In my own personal experience i wanted to hire a selenium developer for a project. My max budget was max $1000 and the lowest price i got quote for the project was around $3000, i ended up buying chatgpt plus subscription and learn at my own pace. within 3 months i was able to deploy the project myself and the learning curve was much easier for me to handle rather than drowning my self into udemy lectures hell hole.

I have seen trends evolving at much rapid speed so to catch up with it i think Ai is helping to stay upto date.

No, i think AI is just an assistant to us, at least for now. It makes things easier, but yes, it can hinder our research capabilities.

I don't think its any different than reading a book about whatever. Its just in a different format.

I use it for mainly everything -- To manage my problems (kinda like my own therapist) , to coding, to building websites, to give me exercises, to make my meal plans, etc...

I think you can chalk it up to being the all-in-one ultimate tool. Replacing a lot of things and compiling them in one place.

It definitely makes most people more lazy. The few that use it as you would with a tool will succeed, because LLMs have their limitations and their strong suits. Do not replace your own thinking with an LLM.

I dont think it inherently makes people more or less smart. As usual the access to information and the rate has significantly increased. If you read your information from a book, google or chatgpt does any of them inherently make you more/less smart. In terms of lazy, I feel a lot more productive as im spending more time doing more complex nuanced things

AI can speed things up but can also make people rely on it more which might slowly dull independent thinking

I noticed how overly dependent i've been and i tried so hard to do without it today, i really struggled but i made it!

It's all about how you use it. AI is a powerful tool. If you're letting it think for you, then yeah, you're getting lazy. But if you're using it to learn new things quicker, get ideas, or speed up tasks so you can focus on the harder problems, then it's a net gain. The key is to still understand the output and challenge it. Don't let your own skills atrophy.
i'm getting wayyy too lazy then, time to get off that slop

but don't you think in the course of it 'making our lives easier' we're allowing it to do everything for us

That is a fair assessment of course. However, its happened long before AI was ever a thing.

Encyclopedias, for instance, went away (so to speak) at the invention of the internet.

Ya know?
