Yes thats right. Sitemap helps in crawlablity of the google or other bots. Having a sitemap is a great advantage in indexing.
 
I haven't bothered with sitemaps for years. Having a site that's easy to navigate for both bots and humans is just good practice. Neither should have to look hard to find their way around your site.
 
Cant hurt to add it right might as well help them crawl a little easier
